Session Description
KENOTE PRESENTATION
The Transformation of your Practice: Looking into the Crystal Ball
Big data and analytics are here to stay. This enlightening overview of the transformation of the world of discovery as we know it, is presented by seasoned litigator and well-known blogger, Ralph Losey, who brings humour, hands-on experience and insight to the ruminations and questions on the minds of industry leaders today. Themes include:
  • The growing importance of electronic documents in all litigation, big and small.
  • The new role of the lawyer: Steward? Custodian? Big Data Cop?
  • Will robots with artificial intelligence someday replace lawyers and judges - or at minimum change what they do?
  • What competencies and education will soon become standard?
  • What is the greatest strength and vulnerability of law firms in the next five years?
  • Why litigation support is still underutilized as a practice group
  • What effect will predictive coding have on review approaches?
  • Predictions on the billable hour.
  • What other unexpected outcomes should we be prepared for?
Abandoning the Fire Drill: The Emergence of eDiscovery as a Business Process eDiscovery is no longer just a legal issue. It is now a major consideration in the management of information touching every department, system and device used within an organization. Learn how corporations in Canada are successfully transforming their business process to take control of eDiscovery. This session will highlight key opportunities for corporations to increase their accountability while working effectively with outside counsel to manage risks, minimize disruption and reduce costs when faced with unforeseen legal events.
Project Recovery: Forensics Beyond the Basics Vice President of eDiscovery at Ricoh Legal, a Certified Fraud Examiner, Licensed Private Investigator and testifying expert, David Greetham, joins us to provide a comprehensive perspective on the science of forensics through a series of case studies spanning from cybercrime to the average case. Learn about the different types of forensics and the accompanying standards in use, as well as the growing demand for forensics in a social media context.
The Perfect Storm of Information Management: Data Security, Privacy and eDiscovery The management of evidence and security provides a challenging and sometimes competing convergence of issues when attempting to balance risk against cost, compliance and court imposed deadlines. In this session, a panel of Canadian and US experts will discuss factors that can put you and your client at risk, the elements of a data breach response plan and the intersection of data security, privacy, ediscovery and information governance. This presentation will also include an overview of current initiatives underway to develop international standards and guidelines that align to relevant standards including ISO/IEC 27037.
Merging into the Fast Lane: Enhancing Results with Technology-Driven Review A recent RAND study estimates that every gigabyte of data reviewed costs approximately $18,000. Automated approaches to review, when used independently or in combination with traditional review methods, are proving to be extremely effective at creating better efficiency, cost certainty and more effective management of large-scale review. This eye-opening and engaging session will demonstrate how the relationship between Analytics and First- and Second-Level Review is being transformed. Learn simple strategies for aligning service provider, client and law firm competencies towards a more powerful result.
Information Governance: Inherent Opportunities for Law Firms Information Governance (IG) provides a new and unique opportunity for law firms to work with their clients to manage risk, reduce cost and increase efficiency. Join Martin Tuip, Executive Director, IG Products at ARMA International, to understand how IG provides a mechanism to leverage existing relationships and expertise to expand the portfolio of law firms. Learn more about the principles and technicalities of IG assessments and how to build a business case to demonstrate the benefits of this service offering to your firm.
Mediating eDiscovery Disputes: A Canadian Perspective One of the key challenges facing Canadian courts today is the management of eDiscovery disputes with limited resources. Join this elite panel of legal community stakeholders who are proposing a uniquely Canadian alternative to the U.S. eDiscovery Master role. Join us as we explore options for parties to facilitate the alignment of discovery plans themselves or, with the encouragement of the judge or arbitrator, hire a “neutral party” to resolve their ediscovery dispute. Where would the onus for Discovery Plans lie? What resources exist? What precedents exist for this emerging trend?
